How do I copy recordings or photos to my computer?

To copy recordings to your computer, click the options icon at the bottom of the screen (it looks like a gear).  Tap "Copy Files for Syncing to Computer".   You must have enough free space on your phone or device to copy the files from the app to the "share to computer" folder. If the copy fails to complete, this could be the issue.  After all files are copied, then:

Option #1 - Using "Copy Files for Syncing to Computer"

1.  Plug your device into your computer using your USB cable .

2.  Load iTunes.

3.  Click on the device name (You should see your device listed in the upper right hand side of iTunes).

4.  Click on the Apps tab

5.  Scroll all the way to the bottom of the Apps and you will see "File Sharing" on the lower left side of the screen.

6.  Click on the app name (TSR, etc. - You should then see your files listed on the right side of the screen).

7.  Highlight one or more files and click "Save To" on the bottom right corner to navigate to the folder you want to save your files and click "Select Folder".

8.  After you save your files press the Delete key to delete the files from the shared file folder of your device.

Option #2 - Copy Files to your computer using Windows Explorer

1.  Take a video or photo in Top Secret.

2.  Click on the setting button (looks like a gear) and click on Copy Photos/Videos to Camera Roll.

3. It will copy the video or photo to your camera roll and then it will ask if you want to delete from the Top Secret Video or Photo Library. Select the appropriate response for your needs.

4.  Close Top Secret and go to iPhone camera roll.

5.  Plug your phone in to your computer.

6.  A box should pop up that says "Auto Play" and give you several Device Options.

7.  Select "Open Device to view files using Windows Explorer."

8.  It should bring up a window that says "Internal Storage" - Double Click on the Icon.

9.  It should bring up a folder named "DCIM".

10.  Open that folder and you may see two different folders.

11.  Open the first one and then drag the file to your desktop.

12.  Open the second one and then drag the file to your desktop (if there is only one file disregard this step).

How do I delete recordings or photos from the shared documents folder?

1.  Plug your device into your computer using your USB cable

2.  Load iTunes.

3.  Click on the device name on the left hand side

4.  Click on the Apps tab

5.  Scroll all the way to the bottom of the Apps tab

6.  Click on the app name (TSR)

7.  Highlight one or more files and press the Delete key to delete the file(s) from the shared file folder of your device.

How does my friend play the audio file I emailed him?

Top Secret will record and send the audio in Apple's preferred AIFF audio format which ends in an AIF file extension.  If the file doesn't play, the recipient may need to install a free media player that supports AIFF.  Ask them to type in Google 'free aiff player' or similar for various player options.

How do I recover deleted recordings or photos?

We’re not aware of a way to undelete files.  However, iTunes can back up your applications and some data.  We’ve not tested whether iTunes backs up Top Secret recordings/photos, so you would have to try that.  If you plug in your device, load iTunes, and go to the Summary tab, you can click Restore and select your latest iTunes backup.  This will revert your phone or device to where it was at the last back up -- so be careful!  If there's no backup, we’re not aware of any way to undelete a file once it's deleted on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod.

While this may not help recover an already lost file, you can copy recordings/photos to your computer so you have them backed up in the future.  To do this, click the options icon at the bottom of the screen (it looks like a gear).  Tap "Copy Files for Syncing to Computer".   After all files are copied, then:

1.  Plug your device into your computer using your USB cable

2.  Load iTunes.

3.  Click on the device name on the left hand side

4.  Click on the Apps tab

5.  Scroll all the way to the bottom of the Apps tab

6.  Click on the app name (TSR)

7.  Highlight one or more files and click Save As on the bottom right corner to save to your computer

8.  Press the Delete key to delete the files from the shared file folder of your device.

I deleted all recordings/photos in Top Secret but space does not seem to be free on my device.

If you copied files to the shared folder at some point via the button in Options, then you will need to delete those from iTunes:

1.  Plug your device into your computer using your USB cable

2.  Load iTunes.

3.  Click on the device name on the left hand side

4.  Click on the Apps tab

5.  Scroll all the way to the bottom of the Apps tab

6.  Click on the app name (TSR)

7.  Select one or more files and press the Delete key to delete the files from the shared file folder of your device.

Why does sound detection not work?

Normally sound detection works well with the default settings, but when it does not, here’s some tips that may help:

Load the App Store and make sure you’re running the latest version of the app by checking the updates tab.

Sound detection is activated via the Scheduler feature under the Options button.  Normally the default "Normal" sensitivity works fine but if the sound source is too quiet or too loud, or if there's a lot of background noise you'd like it to ignore, it may require some adjustment.  If Top Secret creates one continuous recording, then you may need to lower the sensitivity level.  Try the Low option.  If it still records continuously, then use the slider bar to lower the sensitivity further, a little at a time until it works properly for your sound source.  Even subtle background noises you may not notice like traffic or the hum of a nearby computer or fan can be detected and recorded if sensitivity is too high.

If it fails to record sounds that you want it to record, then try the High sensitivity option.  Raise the sensitivity until it records everything you want.  Lower it until it ignores any background noises you don't want.

Another feature you can experiment with is the Sound Interval.  This is how long you want Top Secret to keep recording after detecting a sound.  Longer intervals will be less likely to miss subtle sounds.  Shorter intervals will be better at ignoring more silence after a sound is detected.

iPod's with certain external microphones sometimes pick up too much static for the sound detection feature to work reliably.  In this case, try a higher quality microphone.

If none of this is helpful, then perhaps there's a bug that we're not aware of.  In that case, we'd certainly like to fix it, but we'd need you to email us some more information.

1.  What kind of device are you using and the model?  (e.g., iPod 2Gen, iPhone 3GS, etc.)

2.  Are you using an external microphone?

3.  What exactly is it doing?   (Recording continuously, not recording at all, missing just certain bits of sound?)

4.  What have you tried to do to correct it and what were the results?

5.  Any other information that might give us a clue as to how to duplicate the issue?

Why can't I email a file / what is the file limit?

Unfortunately, our app is limited by the capabilities of popular email smtp systems.  Therefore, the email limit is set to a 5MB file size which is approximately 60 seconds or less of audio recording, or even less for video.  After that, you’ll need to share it to your computer via the Share button on the Listen to Audio screen and then syncing to iTunes.

Even the better desktop smtp email systems are generally limited to 10MB or less which you can exceed after two minutes of recording.  Therefore, for sending larger audio files to others, try using services like DropBox.com from your computer, transferbigfiles.com, or similar.

To copy files to your computer, click the options icon at the bottom of the screen (it looks like a gear).

Why can’t I hear the recording?

Make sure you have the latest version of the app by checking the Updates tab in the App Store.  Early versions of the app had some recording bugs.

If updating does not help, here's some other advice:

1.  Make sure you record as close to the sound source as possible.  This can make a large difference.  As far as we know, Top Secret records and plays back at a similar sensitivity and volume as other audio apps and is primarily limited by the hardware of the device.

2. Make sure you turn the volume button on the side of the phone all the way up before playing back the recording.

3. You may still need to put the phone near your ear to hear recordings that were made at a distance from the microphone or were not very loud when recorded.

4. Make sure you don't have headphones plugged in as I think they may override the speaker setting.  Or, by using head phones, you may be able to hear playback more clearly.

5.  If you are using the scheduler and the audio detection feature, and nothing recorded or only bits and pieces recorded, then you may need to increase the sensitivity level setting on the scheduler screen.  While this does not increase the playback volume, it does make the audio detection turn on more easily by being more sensitive to lower volume sounds.  If it ends up recording background noise you don't want, then drop the sensitivity level down some.

The app is locked up every time I load it or experiencing strange problems.

If you can provide any details on what happened before it locked up and what kind of device you're using, that would be helpful in case there's a bug we need to fix.

To reset the app, DOUBLE click the home button at the bottom of your phone/device, then scroll to find Top Secret and hold your finger on the icon until the delete (minus sign) symbol appears.  Tap that to delete the app from memory.  This will not delete it from your phone or harm any of your files.  If you load the app again, it should work this time.

For more general information about how iPhone multi-tasking/task switching works, please see:

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2010/12/07/how-to-close-or-terminate-apps-completely-in-multitasking-iphone/

Another option that can be helpful is to power down the device.  In this case, hold down the power button on the top of your device until the shut down option appears.

If all else fails, you can also try deleting and re-installing the app.  However, this will cause you to lose your recordings, so be careful about doing this if you’ve not copied the recordings you wish to keep to your computer.  To delete an app, hold your finger down on the app icon until the icon starts to "wobble" and then press the red X.  You may then download the app from the app store again to reinstall.  Don't worry, Apple has a history of your purchases and will not charge you again.

How can I hide the small grey circle (status indicator)?

Sorry, Apple currently does not allow us to hide this status indicator or provide the option to the user.

How do I capture screen shots for use as backgrounds?

Hold the round button down on your iPhone.  Then while still holding that down, press and release the power/sleep button on the top of your phone which should make a camera clicking noise to take a screen shot, then release the round button.   There should be a screen capture image in your camera roll that you can then select as a background by pressing options, then backgrounds in Top Secret.  If this doesn't work, please provide more details about what is happening.

I don't have OS4 so I can't copy the audio files to my computer using iTunes.  So, where do I find the audio files when browsing my device?

Using a file browsing utility like iFile or similar, you should be able to find the audio files by browsing to the following location:

Apps / TSR / Documents / .recordings

If you don't see the path, you may need to check the show hidden files box in your app.

When recording audio, how do I remove the red "recording bar that appears when the phone is locked?

Unfortunately that red recording bar is something Apple requires that we have no control over.  However, we doubt most people would know what a red bar with the letters TSR on it means.

How can I change the background?

To switch between saved backgrounds, simply swipe your finger left or right.  If you wish to add your own custom background, then tap the bottom of the screen to reveal the toolbar if it is hidden.  Press the gear icon to open the options menu.  Press Background.  You can then select a new background.  I'd recommend avoiding photographs that are not the exact same resolution or proportions as your device (typically 320x480) or the image may stretch.

To capture your own custom backgrounds, navigate to any screen on your device, press and hold the round HOME button and then press the power button.  You should hear a clicking noise when the screen shot is captured if your phone is not in silent mode.  Go to Settings / Backgrounds and press the + button.  Select your screen shot from the Camera Roll.  When taking screenshots for custom backgrounds, take them while holding the phone upright, left, and right.  Tag your 3 photos as Upright, Left, and Right orientation in the Backgrounds  page so the proper image is used when your phone is rotated.  If it doesn't switch to the image you prefer when you rotate the phone, then you may need to flick your finger to move to the background in that orientation that you want.

I can't figure out how to record or to snap a photo.

First select the audio, video, or camera icon on the toolbar at the bottom to set your recording mode.  To start recording or to snap a photo, tap anywhere on the screen.  You should see a small grey circle in the bottom right side of the screen light up.  Tap screen again to stop an audio or video recording.  Tap the bottom of the screen to bring up the toolbar menu.

I’m having trouble with the volume of recordings or playback.

1. Make sure you turn the volume button on the side of the phone all the way up before playing back the recording.

2. Try turning the speaker button on prior to playback.  This is located on the top of the playback screen.

3. You may still need to put the phone near your ear to hear recordings that were made at a distance from the microphone or were not very loud when recorded.

4. Make sure you don't have headphones plugged in as I think they may override the speaker setting.

5.  Try to position the phone as close to the sound source as possible.  This can make a large difference.

If you weren't speaking directly into the microphone when the recording was made, the volume level may be pretty low on the recording.  It should not be any lower than it is if you record the exact same thing, from the same distance, using the built-in audio app.  If there's a significant difference, please let me know the model of iPhone you have and any other details you can provide to duplicate it.  If there is a bug on a certain device or OS, we would certainly like to fix it.

Why does the speaker button not work?

The speaker button works here, but there are caveats.  If you weren't speaking directly into the microphone when the recording was made, the volume level may be pretty low on the recording.  In this case, make sure you turn the volume button on the side of the phone all the way up.  In addition, you may still need to put the phone near your ear to hear recordings that were not made at a distance from the microphone or were not very loud when recorded.  Lastly, make sure you don't have headphones plugged in as I think they will override the speaker setting.

The background images I choose in settings are randomly changing by themselves. Why won't the image I select as background stay in place?

Do you mean the background image changes when you rotate the phone?  If so, you'll notice in options->settings->background that each image is tagged for a certain orientation:  left, right, or upright.  If you rotate your phone left, it will use an image tagged as left orientation. When you flip through the backgrounds, it will only show images for the left orientation when your phone is orientated left.  If you rotate the phone right, it should use an image tagged as right, and so forth.

For built-in backgrounds, it will keep the same image up as you rotate the phone.  For custom backgrounds, there's currently no way to associate 3 custom images as belonging to the same screen shot so when rotating a custom background, the app will simply select another image which is tagged with the current orientation of the phone.  If this is not the image you want, then simply swipe your finger until you find the desired background.   We hope this makes sense.
